    Warning for those with seedlings and young plants in hot weather

    Seems a bit odd, considering how miserably cold its been, to say that the welcome sun can also pose a few problems. But yesterday I found some of the seedling dill plants I'd put in the poly-tunnel and a tray of just germinated flower seeds had got somewhat scorched in places on the foliage. Obviously my fault for putting them too close to the outside cover.

    So if you do have seedlings or new plants it can be a wise precaution on sunny days just to move them down to the floor in the afternoons of they are near the glass/polythene. Also don't forget to increase the watering on your bigger plants - I've gone from twice a week to twice a day on some I think need it.

    I keep having to check my seedlings aren’t too hot,Ive left the zippers open on the blowaway or it would be about a million degrees in there!

      That's stating the bladdy obvious, nick, but yes a few of us, who should know better (including me!) have today admitted to frying some seedlings in the greenhouse. tut tut!

      As well as giving as much ventilation as possible, it's worth rigging up some shade for seedlings, when the sun is this strong.

        most of my smaller pots are in trays,i water the trays and let them take what they want,plus some will evaporate .

                My 45 year old 6x8 GH has always had an auto open roof window.

                Last year I fitted an end louver opener, it works well, cost about the same as the GH originally did !

                When I recovered the benches from the shed for spring germination etc. I found the louver opener fouled the benches. A quick fettle with a wood saw and a Wilko bracket sorted that problem.

                Of late I have noticed the greenhouse has installed some extra ventilation of it own. The door end seems to have come adrift from the main GH. Seems a bolt has worked loose.
                I think I might need to remove 4 or 5 panes to fix it.

                Ho hum always something to do.

                  This language is doing my head in. You would have thought at going on 65 I would have got the hang of it by now. Still it was 55 years ago I learnt it so probably forgotten it by now.
                  Is it fouled or fowled ?

                      I'm usually "fooled" rather than fouled or fowled.

                      Never mind, Jimmy, keeps you busy. You know what they say about idle hands ...........or is it Idol Hans?

                        Do you find those room thermometer/humidity sensors are any good outside? Mine's pretty useless for getting the ambient temperature as it seems to be impossible to avoid direct sunlight. I've got the flap on my blow away completely open and it thinks it's 53C!

                            Can't help on that - I'm more of a "let the plants tell you what's going on " bloke - so I have a look at the leaves and check for any flagging etc.

                            Also you tend to get to know which things will cope with different conditions, also that large well grown plants are able to ride out extremes which will badly affect seedlings of the same type.
