  • Is This Normal???

First year growing Tomatoes and as my flowers have turned to fruit there is now like an extra shoot sprouting from the flower stem producing leaves and more flowers. I'm a bit concerned as to wether I should keep this or not as I've no idea how it is going to support itself should it actually bear fruit. I have 2 plants one is not doing it but the other one has 2 sets of flowers doing this. Please help I'm new to all this.

    Hi Rustyred and welcome.
First of all - don't panic Tomatoes seem to make up their own rules about how they're going to grow - and the rules change each year!!
Do you know what type of tomato it is and are they both the same type?

Thank you hiya,I think they are both Italian plum and they are about 5ft tall so I also have the quandary of whether to stop them getting any tall I'm up to 5 trusses on both.

I just nip off any leaves that grow from the end of a flower truss - I only want tomatoes growing there! not more leaves.

It's common that they do that - it doesn't mean there is something wrong with the plant

So you would cut this off even though it has now produced leaves and flowers and is a cm thick?

I would - but my tomatoes have to do what they are told - other people have a more laissez-faire attitude

Rustyred that extra shoot that you cut off put it into water and it will produce new roots then later on you'll have a new tom plant.

If mine have flowers before I notice them, I pinch out above those flowers. Mine are going nuts at the minutes, side shooting from all over the place and doing this extra growth on the already set trusses. I was determined to do the "arm pits" rigorously this year and still the beggars keep circumventing me! If you think they are a bit heavy add a prop.

PS. I just don't have enough time to say hello to everyone as they join so please take this as a delighted to see you here!

You could nip it off, stick it in't ground, let it sulk for a few days & hopefully you should have a new plant next week.

Mine do whatever they want, I tried to be strict with them, but they just ignored me.
