  • Cauliflower Germination issue

Hello - I've had a look about on past threads and found the Germination Temps one, which is really helpful and says that Cauliflowers need a minimum germ. temp. of 4 degrees. I sowed my caulis two weeks ago now and all the other brassicas I sowed at the same time (in fact all the seeds I sowed, except the squash seeds, again!) have germinated and are growing well (in small pots outside) but I have a complete no show from the caulis. I have kept them in the blow away to keep the temp more consistent but 'nada'. Does anyone have any secrets for germinating caulis?? I know they can be a bit of a pest to grow but last year I didn't have any problems (apart from getting cauliflowers in March when I thought I'd have them in December ).

I know lettuce won't germinate if it's too hot , like in a green house.
    So perhaps caulis are similar.
Did you have them in a GH ?
Expect the worst in life and you will probably have under estimated!

If you've had other brassicas germinate under the same conditions then I'd say it's probably duff seeds. Brassicas are usually a doddle to get to sprout but can suffer as seedlings if it's too hot or slugs about.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Not an expert as this is my first year I started some seeds off in March in a propagator on my windowsill which are now all in the ground. I've also experimented, some seeds were sown into a trough in peat free multi-purpose in my blow away greenhouse and they all germinated and are currently in individual pots.

So I'm in agreement with Alison, maybe they are duff seeds.
        What would Delia do?
