  • Best red salad tomato?

Over the (many) growing years I've tried lots of toms, both outdoor and in the greenhouse. I've come to terms with the fact I like 'vanilla' (as an analogy I mean).

In which regards I like most of all (well in this country, abroad is different) I like red salad toms best. So g'wan recommend me the BEST red salad tom to grow. Ta.

I'd go for Ferline, which produces a mixture of beefsteak and smaller tomatoes with excellent flavour. You do have to be careful not to let them get over-ripe though as they can start to rot from the stalk end.

Yes. 'Vanilla' tomato to me is 'red salad', cherry is too small and anyway I'm growing Sungold and Bottondoro.

Gardener's Delight and Sungold are both great salad toms. I just got my greenhouse last year so haven't got oodles of experience, but these two were great and I'll be growing them again this year (amongst others).

Sorry, re-reading, you're not looking for a cherry. I had those above sliced in my salads.

Shirley was a larger one that was good for slicing. It needed to be left a bit longer to develop its flavour as I recall.

If you don't mind growing F1s, you could try Big Daddy. Otherwise, Cuore di Bue might be a goer.

Bottondoro is an f1 (it's very tasty and prolific) and I think (can't remember) Sungold is also an f1.

I think Cuore di Bue (bulls heart?) is a bit big, but I see you're in Spain so there's differential growing going on! Lol. For a 'vanilla' salad tom I usually grow Matina. Wish we had the weather to grow toms like they do in the Med.

Yeah Gardeners Delight is a good do-er, tasty and prolific. I sometimes grow it outdoors just because I've room. I think our old neighbour used to grow Shirley, I might try that. We do have the cherries in our salad mainly but I like to grow a 'standard-sized' red tomato.

If you like something a bit unusual and tasty both to slice and to cook with try Ananas Noire, the fruit grow big and need a greenhouse, but they're easy to grow and you can self-save the seeds.

Ailsa Craig and Harbinger are my regulars, St Piere is also tasty. For bush I have Amateur and First in Field. They all have good tomatoey flavours.

Not sure about the definition of a red salad tomato, but good old Ailsa Craig has good size and taste for adding to salad, plus it can be grown from your own saved seed each year.

Bettondoro and Sungold are both F1 and yellow and sweet.
Are you looking for a red version of these?
I've no idea what you mean by "vanilla".

I think you can get whopper Cuore di Bue and more reasonable sized ones too. I grow the smaller ones. Still very good.

I was going to recommend Cuore di Bue as well, yes they are bigger than the standard (vanilla) salad toms in the shop but very tasty, few seeds and easy slice/prepare. Otherwise plenty of grapes here would recommend Alisa craig.
You have already checked out what some of us are planning to grow this year on the 2020 tomato grow list but have you seen the following for ideas?

You're winning me over, might have a google. We grew Costoluto Fiorentino last year and I liked those.
