Sprouting Broccoli is tough, why?

Hi all, anyone help as to why my sprouting broccoli is horrible?
The first spears I had were great but now very chewy and really inedible. Could it be the cold we have had?

Not a beginner so I know when it's ready and which bits to cut.

Plants tend to get tougher as they get old and when they grow slowly - so yes the cold weather is mainly to blame.

You could let a plant grow on so you can save some seed if you want, but of course with it being quite cheap it may not be worth it.

I agree. I think it’s related to the rate of growth.
