  • Sweet potato?

I was planning on growing some sweet potatoes but it seems you can only buy them in large quantities (10 slips or more)

Does anyone have any spare or does anyone want to split some? Flexible about arrangements.

    Anyone?

I bought a couple of sweet potatoes from the supermarket and put them in water. They're growing well. I'll cut them into slips soon and put them in pots.
might be the easiest solution?? ( just make sure you buy the orange skinned ones- not creamy/yellow!)

I'm not too far from you bramble killer. I don't mind splitting a pack. PM me and I'll send a cheque and padded envelope etc.

I've never grown them and have always wanted to try. They had some info on varieties and offers in GYO last year....Shall I look back? Where did you have in mind to source them?

How do you grow them in water - in a tray or pot, and do you put potato in lengthways or upright?

          Thank you.

I bought plants 3 plants off ebay £8 with delivery, t65 or something. But Beauregard Improved is the best uk cropper and tassting. T65 was the only variety i could get small stock of to try as ive never grown any before. Plants are better than slips, as you get a quicker crop. Thease links may help also the last link has a vid and diagrams on how to grow from plants, almost the same as potatoes juts leave most of the laves at the top when covering. The 1st link is were i got my 3 plants.

Hi Nico, I was wondering how long you had you potatos in water, as mine have been in for about 2 weeks and aren't doing anything. I do change the water every few days, as it start looking yuk, or should i just leave it.

Hmmm..well I'm clearly not the person to ask- as mine have suddenly got yellow leaves and wilted!!!

Up until 4 days ago they looked great too!

OK- sweet potatoes were put in glasses 3/4 full of room temp water- upright ( you've got to look closely to see the pointy top). Left near a radiator at 17-20C all day.
                      Water changed every day.
Roots appeared after about 6 days- shoots soon afterwards.

I've started them later previous years and cut them into slips- literaly lenghways
with some roots and a shoot.
That's when the potato has withered and died

This year I thought I'd start earlier and pot on indoors- but the leaves have dropped off before I managed to pot on.

Flipping heck- that's my third year without success ( all I can think of is that the kitchen isn't light enough.)

Any positive ideas would be welcome for my last attempt next year!!!

That's why you need to change the water every day! ( well- that's what I found to be the case!)
