Castor oil granules seem to be a major deterrent although the plants themselves are poisonous - there are bulbs you can plant that smell bad to moles but not to humans - there is also another repellent called mole balls that they find unpleasant. I think a combination of these coupled with electronic noise/vibration devices is the way forward for those who find killing moles unacceptable.
