We have field mice which do exactly the same thing.
Problem is that mine live in tunnels under the ground- and mice can apparently get through a hole as small as the diameter of a pencil
...it'd need to be very fine mesh and dug deep to make some sort of impact on them.
Locals here use moth balls around the place but one of the ingredients is Naphthalene which is a really dangerous chemical which I wouldn't want rainwashed into my soil!
I also wouldn't want to use poison.
Cheap mouse traps are 'kinder' to the environment- but you never know what other wildlife ( eg frogs) you might accidentally catch!
...perhaps a humane mouse trap instead- which will need checking at least 2x per day???
