My post of last night seems to have disappeared!

Basil is, indeed, a known insect repellent. I use Av*n SSS, and buy it in bulk on eB*y, but I no longer like the smell. I have made repellent before, using very strong cold tea, citronella oil, washing-up liquid and crushed elder leaves. I cannot remember the quantities, but it worked on me and the Horses. I'll have to dig out the recipe, although a 'g**gle' search will probably be quicker!
