....compost tea bin. They are a white/grey colour .Shaped a bit like those torpedo sweets you used to get, but with a long stringlike tail. The little ones wiggle about but the bigger ones just float . The container stinks but I'm guessing thats usual with nettles etc. Any clues on what these things are and are they harmful ?

Seems like you have some rat tailed maggots. These live in fouled or fetid water where the oxygen levels are low. The tail is used as a siphon or snorkel as an aid to respiration. The adult is a type of hover-fly, otherwise known as a drone fly.

I'd throw it on the compost heap, but's not much fun dispensing it while drone flies are buzzing and hatching all around and over you, and bluebottles are chasing you up and down the garden path.

I now do my stinky teas in sealed containers (5 litre water bottles)

It's a lot to chuck on the compost heap. It's in a dustbin

if you can get your hands in there, just pull out all the lumpy bits and chuck them on your veg somewhere, or compost heap, then cover up the liquid you've got left

The lumpy bits were in a fishing keep net so that's now been hauled out and emptied on the compost heap and I've covered the bin over with some perspex sheet and wood to keep it on .
