Much as greasing the leek amuses me; he put it over the small pustule [his words], to stop it spreading.

Serious head on now.
...........I wonder whether it actually kills the rust by smothering it or just stops the spores from spreading further up the plant or to other alliums?
Leeks have a natural waxy coating and to apply fungiscides/pesticide or liquid manure aint easy, that's why its a good idea to add a bit of washing up liquid to break the surface tension!

Never tried it (actually I prefer gravy with mine) but I can see why it would work. However, wouldn't every little splash of soil, grit, lordy knows what stick to your leeks? and you'd have to wash them extra well to get the grease off.
Yep, greasing the leek sounds like a euphemism!
My father in law's dad used to find a toad and put it in his greenhouse at the start of the season. Every day he used to move it to a different corner. 'I'm just going to move me toad' has a similar ring. Or is it just me?Whoever plants a garden believes in the future.

I've seen blokes using it for this purpose so it must work. It has to be caught at an early stage though as it spreads rapidly.Originally posted by piskieinboots View PostToby said it prevents it from spreading not that it prevents the leeks from getting it in the first place - hence my serious question of asking more experienced gardens if they had tried itMy Majesty made for him a garden anew in order
