  • Copper tape

An old guy here in work has told me to use copper tape around the sides of my new raised veg beds to keep slugs an snails away. I have never heard of this method before. So my question is " has anyone used it and does it work ? " before I go out and buy some.

instead of buying some, find some old wire, strip the plastic off, and use the wire

Hi ya, I went down that route this summer and bought some from ebay, it did work to a degree, although the slugs climbed up the growth that was touching the ground and in from neighbouring plants, would use it again it did help though not 100% , also you are suppossed to keep in clean and polished !! there are a couple of vidoes on you tube of slugs on copper tape if your bored ! I have tried it and found that it peels off quite easily and had to staple it on , still got slug so still out on this one. I try and get any unwanted pipe instead but I like the idea of stripping old wire down

Thanks all. I think I will hunt down some scrap wiring in work and give that a try.

I made some collars cutting rings of guttering down pipe and sticking a band of copper tape round near the top.

As Beaufontboy said it works to a degree, at least it stopped the slugs eating the young plants.

This coming season I will make up more and try it more extensively,

I suppose you have to be sure that your beds don't have slug/snail eggs already in the soil, otherwise you will be keeping some in as well.

When I first saw copper rings, I thought surely the slugs will just burrow under, so was sceptical about them.

However although it seems to have stopped most damage, I'm still quite impressed with my results so far.
