Last year there were two very large snails in the garden. They stayed on the fence and didn't bother the plants. I (in a moment of daftness), named them Farquar and Sir Henry....
... this year there was been a plethora of snails - more chavy than posh, and I have taken to picking them up and chucking them into the great yonder! These snails have not been named at all!
You could always collect up a load of snails and eat them. I watched Gordon Ramsays F Word last week or the week before and that's exactly what he did. HE sen this kids out to hunt for snails promising them about 10p per snail and then put them in a jar with a bit of water for a couple of days. he then put a carrot in the jar and waited another couple of days and then put then removed the carrot and put the jar in the fridge as the cold sends them into a deep sleep. He then made up some sauce and then I think he boiled the snails and added them to the sauce.
I've never tried snails myself, but if they're tasty and you're willing to pay a lot in a restaurant to eat them, you might as well pick them from your own garden and save yourself some cash.
Eskymo, that sounds absolutely disgusting!
I remember going to Belgium with the school when I was about 10 & the teachers eating snails & tormenting me by waving them about saying they were lovely but I refused to try one. They just look horrible & the thought of eating the slimey little creatures makes me ill!
slugs are edible as well - so a friend says - but I wouldn't want to eat those either - I'm with you SueA - couldn't possibly think about eating the slimy little suckers.
When my mother came to visit us from Sicily, She couldn't believe how many juicy snails were in my garden. Automatically she picked the best and after few days they were left in a container ( apparently to clean them ) they were cooked in a light tomato, garlic and potato sauce. It was a fantastic dinner together with garlic bread and plenty of white wine. If it moves you eat it, if doesn't move you still eat it

Snails in tomato, garlic and potato sauce sounds more appetising than my previous experience of snails in lashings of garlic butter which unfortunatley didn't make them any less chewy. I doubt I would be allowed to cook them my daughter seems to view them as friends and/or toys I suppose that's the joy of being 4.
Bright Blessings
Earthbabe If at first you don't succeed, open a bottle of wine.
