Has anybody noticed the extreme lack of cabbage whites this year.Last year I was fighting them of with a big stick.This year I've only seen a couple

Yeah, I think it's been the peculiar weather - last night when I went out on the slug patrol it felt quite wintry. Summer solstice indeed ! -
we never seem to get butterflies here, mind you, i've never had flowers in my garden either, so that might be whyComment

hrumphhhhhhhhh nowt wrong with it ( i was gonna say that a bomb wouldn't cure, but they tried that didn't they) anyway, i'm only in manchester ish .... and it's nice here and not full of snotty southerners

When I was moving up north [as they say dahn sarf] about 11 years ago, the cleaner on site at the A13 site offices said 'ooh you don't wanna move up norf'
'why not?' I asked
'It smells up norf'
she was 100% deadly serious.

Just checked my brassicas and ain't seen no eggs.Do you think it might of been the mild winter followed by the cold spell earlier in the year.I'm trying to do this quitely so the cabbage whites don't hear

Well I'm pleased to tell you they haven't moved this far north either!
Probably the never ending influx of greenfly, whitefly and blackfly have killed there host crop
ie my brassicas!
I suppose they could all be picketing outside the enviromesh factory?
Just had a vision of cabbage whites carrying billboards with 'BAN ENVIROMESH' emblazoned upon them and a group of them giving interviews to the BBC!
This gardening lark gets to you after a while!

We are normally lucky to have large numbers of butterflies in the garden and this year we have had fewer than we have ever had. We always have the usual suspects, the first is the Orange Tip and we certainly have had them, as the weather was normal earlier on, But the Tortoiseshells, the Red Admirals and the Peacocks have been noticeable by their absence. I am hoping they will appear shortly, but the Cabbage White is one I don't miss at all, it saves a daily job - and I have over a hundred brassicas that would normally need inspection !Comment

my caterpillar season usually starts with the diamond back moth in the second week of june, no sign of them so far -I guess is was probably the cold spring and they'll soon be munching everything as usual.
I get cabbage whites on everything from the beginning July - hope their not late as well as I tryt to put alot of autumn/winter brassicaas out after the worst is over.
