Red Ants

This may be a silly question but do red ants do any damage to my newly sprouting veggies - I have noticed my veg patch in inundated with the little b*****s. Is there anyway of getting rid of them aside from ant powder - I react quite nastily to their bites (big welts where they've bitten me) and would rather get rid of htem all together, but unfortunately I don;t like the idea of pouring boiling water over them - bad karma and all that !! I could always get my OH to do it for me!! Bad Karma by proxy??
