  • Yes, the very concept of ADDING water to the ground is alien and perverse...

    • It. Is. Raining.

Glory be! Of course there's also a mighty storm on the way, but, hey....

      • Spot on Pen, the wind has just started to pick up and is gusting enough to bend trees.

I look down the road to see other peoples hanging baskets of flowers doing a dance, whilst mine, tomatoes of course are tucked up in a glass topped potting shed........

Thanks again keep up the good work....

Hehe, reminds me of a few years ago when there was both a hosepipe ban AND flooding. IIRC it was Andy Parsons on Mock the Week who asked if the hosepipe ban meant that he could not use a hose to empty the water out of his lounge

            • Good evening all.
Hector has been and gone leaving everything battered and bruised.
Unfortunately, not a drop of rain.
The ground in now very, very dry.
Still waiting for the washed buckets and water butts to be refilled.

              • Same here. Very windy but not a drop. Forecast is saying rain overnight Friday through until midday Saturday however as we are bone dry and sitting on sandstone I don’t think we will find that amount of rain improving the situation.

                • Once the ground gets really dry in summer it is hard to get enough rain to replenish the water supply. We got about 1mm over night but it has been so windy that more than that is likely to have evaporated during the day, especially as it was also sunny.

                  • Heads up for some chilly nights towards the end of this week as high pressure moves in from the west turning the wind into the north. Single figure over night temperatures can be expected widely, vulnerable areas may even see a touch of ground frost. It will be warm, possibly even hot in the south for the first half of the week, and days will continue to be warm in the strong June sunshine, but it may pay to think about closing greenhouse/polytunnel doors and protecting vulnerable plants with fleece if you live in a frost-prone area. Keep an eye on forecast over night temperatures.

                    These are the current predictions:

                    • You can't be using the 'F' word at this time of year! Although I do remember a few years ago walking up Kinder Scout on midsummers day (which is this week) and it being 2C at the top. Got back to the cottage and lit the coal fire!

Crazy year for the weather, there's nowt like a perturbation...

                        • After the storm it seems to have settled into more typical June weather for us, struggling to get above 15C during the day and we've been down to 8C overnight. Sighs. Things are loving the bit of rain we had, though!

Yes, that is absolutely right - although the cause of the change is the cause of the storm, ie the jet stream. We now have a more normal westerly regime, in which the north and west of the country is the wettest part.

Next week is very uncertain at present. Some of the model runs have a continuing westerly pattern with lows coming through at times and more changeable weather, others take us into a heatwave. We shall see.

The colder end to the week is very obvious here. Very little rain (but wetter in the west).

Surface temperatures show some members forecasting high 20s temperatures next week (you can usually add a couple of degrees to these predictions), but the average white line is only around 20C. It will be warmer in the south.

Note that far more of the lines are now well above the average red line for next week. This run shows a cool down as we go into July with more in the way of rainfall spikes then too, but that is a long way off.

But first we have the cooler spell starting tomorrow night into Thursday - there is still the possibility of frost in vulnerable areas.
