It's official - July the coldest for 22 years

My peppers and chilis are suffering in sympathy!...absolutely dreadful year.

On OH's FB he had a piccie come up from this day last year..peas, radish, lettuce, beans ,2 types of plums,courgettes, mirabelles, spuds...etc etc to overflowing on the table outside.

Today we managed to pick 10 plums, no mirabelles 4 lbs spuds, no radish, no peas, our first 3 French beans, lettuce.
No way will we have a glut this year in anything apart from blackberries!

I read your thread title and thought, "No s***, Sherlock...." We're NW England, but we share a lot of your weather. I'm usually not a weather-whiner, it's all swings and roundabouts, but I don't think I remember a July as consistently cold as this before, barring two or three very hot days at the start.

It was so brief here that you could have blinked and missed it but it does seem a long time ago!

Seems that every year the weather hits a new record for something...wettest this, coldest that...highest floods, lowest rainfall, strongest winds.

I think we're in a time of flux and will soon need to learn how to grow rice and cacti to be sure of a crop in any given year

mine went out late too and I am just down the road from you, I dont even have beans to pick yet. Luckily I grew some early dwarf beans which have kept us going, but I'm sure the weather has let the pole beans down a lot.

The other problem I have had this July is slugs and snails. I had almost none the whole year, then they appeared when the conditions became more favourable. The big damage has been to one or two varieties of potatoes - the leaves, which look like they have been attacked by caterpillars, but it is the slugs and snails. I have had to start going on midnight hunts again to put a stop to it.

I do hope it warms up for August, though right now it looks like its about to rain.

My tomatoes have only just set flower and pollination has been so poor that I'll be lucky if the fruit is pea-sized before the frost sets in.

I optimistically bought a garden hammock during the 2 day "heatwave" about 6 weeks ago and it's still in its wrapper.
