A good hair washing as Nicos said, I also use apricot scrub in my hands and finish with a very generous amount of e-45 cream. That seems to do the trick for me.

Rub barrier cream into hands then scrape nails along hands barrier cream should fill space behind nails.Barrier cream is easier to scrub out.

I'd heard of this trick too bubblewrap, but scraping nails along a bar of soap rather than barrier cream before gardening. Sounds like it could work - I've always got my mits into the soil before thinking of anything like that

Hmmm. I generally find a 12 1/2 hour shift at work does the trick especially for the ingrained dirt. By the time I've washed my hands about 20 times or more during the day they are very clean. I have to keep my nails short for work (both types) so that is never an issue. I also find that wearing latex, nitrile or vinyl gloves under gardening gloves or on their own help. More sensitivity/dexterity and less dirt.

Oh yes, I scrub and scrape - I wear out nail brushes! However, broad beans stains just have to grow out!

Oooh that's what I got in my Member of the Month pack! It's great stuff.
Expensive though. I used to use liquid hand soap mixed with salt, which does a decent scouring job - having seen the price, I shall probably hit the salt again when it's gone!

I agree, Flummery, the stains you get from shelling broad beans have to be the worst to get rid of. Almost everything else comes off with a good scrub with a nailbrush, and Bodyshop Hemp hand and foot cream does wonders to repair sore, dry skin.

You just pipped me to the post; Bodyshop Hemp is one of, if not THE best.

When i used to get my hair dyed properly [too tight these days], they used to recommend Flash bathroom scrub. I used it for years to get black and red hair dye off my neck. Don't have any around these days but if you do it would be worth a try.

I resorted to buying a fine file ( from Boots) which is supposed to be for footcare, and has fine diamonds on it- cost about �6.
It's BRILL for gently taking off the fine top layer of skin on the inside part of your palms and fingers, and along with it the stains and ingrained dirt.
Clearly doesn't work for under the nails, but it makes a HUGE difference.
I tend to use it once a week or after a big gardening sesh as there is only so much it can be used without rubbing raw.
Certainly a stocking filler for birthdays/Xmas...or just because you're worth it!
....and now my hands are just soooo soft!! (Crap nails though!!!)
