Would sharp sand be okay to brush into the gaps between paving slabs too?
Mix sand, doesn't matter which type, with dry cement and spread it on the slabs. Brush it in to the gaps with a besom or broom and jobs a guddun.
The sand cement mix will absorb water from below and set like cement! No more weeding between flags!

I think you mix it one to one SBP - one shovel sand one shovel cement.

sorry did I get it wrong are you putting sand in your compost?
We are on London clay.....the same clay they make bricks out of.....and there is a brick works just up the road.
My neighbour delivers sand and if he is over weight he drops the excess on my drive....last year I dropped tons of it on my plot and rotovated in to no effect.
