Comfrey

After reading all the info on the forum and doing some research too, would you recommend planting comfrey (in pots probably!!) for a relatively new gorwer?

Hi Northepaul it depends on the size of your pots! In my experience comfrey is a pretty sturdy plant which has really deep roots - which is possibly why it is so good for trace elements. What were you wanting to use the comfrey for? If it is as 'green' manure, you'll only be able to grow enough with several plants and they will need to be in the ground. If I only had a pot, I think I would grow some of comfrey's relatives, Borage, or Pulmonaria - both decorative plants, but Borage is a herb too - and is good in Pimms I have absolutely no idea if they have any other resemblances to comfrey in the liquid manure stakes!

Make sure you get the Boking 14 variety as it's sterile. Other varieties of comfrey will take over. It's very easy to grow. I planted some earlier this year and in spite of the slugs and snails trying to destroy it it's flourishing.
