  • Green manure

I have a weedy bed in my allotment that I am digging over. Lot's of perennial weeds and I am carefully pulling out as much as I can. It's the first year I've had an allotment and I haven't done much with this bed this year. Next year I'd like to grow some salad and stuff on it, but as it's fairly heavy clay, I was wondering should I try some green manure on it now?

Is it too late this year? What would be good -- I was wondering about fenugreek though I can't now remember why.

Hi Imprudence. Its our first year and we have just planted some. Mustard in 3 raised beds but read not to plant in a bed that is going to be used for brassicas as part of family so we put a mix from Thompson & Morgan in that one. They really grow quick. 2" in about 3 days. You can dig it I think after 2 months. There's lots on web if you put in green manure plus there is one that does break up heavy soils but cant remember name!! pam
