I used to have hundreds, but when I realized a lot of the stacks had thick cobwebs (and on occasion HUGE spiders) in them, it occured to me that I wasn't using them, so last year I had a massive shed clear-out and recycled most. I'd say I've got about 50 now.

I start seeds in plastic food trays that can then be recycled after use so I don't 'overwinter' them, and try to go straight from seed tray to ground, 'cos I've grown tired of the endless watering of pots. Sweetcorn I start in pint yoghurt pots, which then become topless cloches when its planted out (they are clear plastic), so the only thing I really put in pots is toms.
    Location - Leicestershire - Chisit-land
    Endless wonder.

I'm a noob to growing and have way more than 39!

I haven't thought about recycling them at this time, too busy growing stuff in them.
Tried and Tested...but the results are inconclusive

I'd hate to count, but probably nigh on zillions!

I gained a lot of pots and modules from Freecycle when I asked for more for growing for the lottie shop, but as we have a free area at the lottie we gained loads from there too.

I also grow in supermarket containers, mushroom punnets, clear plastic strawberry punnets etc. 3yr old GD always says 'We've saved the rubbish for you Grandma'. 500ml yog pots are brill for tomato plants 'cos of the extra depth.

I do agree with The Large One about the different shapes and sizes though, mostly for ease of stacking. Why do modules of 12 etc come in so many different shapes, even slightly different and they won't stack? Blimey, is this OCD? Even the 'rubbish' is kept in neat stacks. Now I'm getting a good supply, I discard the ones that are slightly different.

Phew! Glad I've got that off my chest
Whether you think you can or whether you think you can't, you are probably right.
