  • using soil for compost

    Hi

I have a new allotment, with an old compost heap.
My question is, can I use this old compost heap in my seed trays.
If not would it be ok for potting on?
If it has no vissible roots in maybe, or what would it take to make it usable?

I am trying to be green and save money.

    Many thanks..Tiger

It is probably full of weed seeds, even if you can't see them. That's why we use clean, sterilised compost. You don't want a seed tray full of loads of plants and you don't know which is crop and which is weeds!
NB. the cheapest seed compost I have found is Coir bricks from Poundland (2 for 50p in their sale)

You can but you would have to seive it (it will be too coarse) and then steralise it either in the Microwave or the over, that will kill off the weed seeds

Use your compost heap as soil conditioner for the main plot, not seed compost. It really is better to buy sterilised seed compost - it saves so many problems, and it's not expensive.
