Compost Tumbler Update

Firstly, my appologies to anyone who hasn't a clue what I am talking about. For those who do I think I have solved my wheel dents........They say a picture paints a thousand words so I will let you decide. As you can see, the barrel still runs on the wheels but overnight the end plate takes the weight, therefore no dents.........I hope.

Does it still require the wheels then? Does the axle run the whole way through?
I'm guessing the new addition helps support some of the weight, but not all of it.

Spot on Ollie. It's not an axle, it's just a plate at the end which takes some of the weight while still running on the wheels.There is not enough weight to dent the barrel because of the plate yet not enough to break the plate because of the wheels if that makes sense. Seems to be working fine at the mo & warming up..........yeh....

the best of projects(well certainly the most enjoyable) always go through a refinement process. Often the refinement is more enjoyable than the start

Hi BM,

Want to pick your expert brain, opinion, etc.

Was thinking of maybe making 2 tumblers from a couple of wheelie bins, scaffold poles through the middle and a spinning thingy located somewhere in the garden. When they need tumbling I could just wheel them to the relevant location, tumbler, then back wherever.

Thoughts, if this makes any sense that is !?

I see where you are coming from Broadway. You will need to build the frame near the bin(s), tumble them in the frame then empty into a wheelbarrow when you need it. As you will need to tumble them several times a week, you won't want to be dragging the bins too far.

Well you've inspired me so I'll give it a go!! I've given up with my Daleks as I don't have the space to turn them.

Also I've seen 2 large wheelie bins dumped down the bottom of the road, bin! there 4 days now, full of rubbish but I'll have them if still there is a few days, I'll take the rubbish down the dump as long as it doesn't contain a body!!

This may be useful as a basic idea for a frame. All you need to do is make a device to keep the lid closed until you want to open it. Be careful, I have read that this type of frame can be a little unstable. Good luck.

Well the 2 wheelie bins from the end of the road disappeared but my Uncle got me one and brought it round yesterday and he also happened to have a bit of scaffold pole that will fit nicely through the middle, pictures to follow

What a fab thread, sorry, I didn't see the original one BM.

My Dad has one of the large green metal 'ComposTumblers' that you see advertised in the gardening mags. He's had it for years, and it is fantastic. It makes compost in no time at all (where the worms come from I've no idea!) the only thing against it is the enormous price Full marks for your ingenious money-saving design!

I meant to ask, have you had any compost from it yet? If so how long did it take?

I have some in at the moment but was in October that I finished the tumbler so winter has slowed it down a tad. I should have a better idea come spring/summer.
