Ok, this is annoying me now. For several weeks when I have put the birds away I hear a noise like a turn dial radio (where you have the the varying high pitch noise as the bar goes across - don't know how else to describe it). I thought possibly bats
Then a couple of times I have heard it in the mornings. Well this morning the culprit flew over but I can't work out what type of bird it is. Even the flying pattern was strange, as although it flew in a line it looked very awkward and kept twisting and turning. We have sparrowhawks - could it be a different call for them - say a mating type call? There are buzzards about but they tend to be outside the village and it seems to small anyway.
Any ideas?

that description does nothing for me. Woodpeckers fly in a straight line, quite low and they sweep up and down. I think you would know a sparrowhawk flying, they look graceful.
