Who knows their bird sounds?

Ok, this is annoying me now. For several weeks when I have put the birds away I hear a noise like a turn dial radio (where you have the the varying high pitch noise as the bar goes across - don't know how else to describe it). I thought possibly bats Then a couple of times I have heard it in the mornings. Well this morning the culprit flew over but I can't work out what type of bird it is. Even the flying pattern was strange, as although it flew in a line it looked very awkward and kept twisting and turning. We have sparrowhawks - could it be a different call for them - say a mating type call? There are buzzards about but they tend to be outside the village and it seems to small anyway.

Any ideas?

I'm usually quite good at bird sounds but I need to hear it that description does nothing for me. Woodpeckers fly in a straight line, quite low and they sweep up and down. I think you would know a sparrowhawk flying, they look graceful.

Could be a sparrowhawk, possibly doing a mating flight (described as a rollercoaster)? I'll ask my Uncle, he's good at birds. I take it it's definitely some kind of bird of prey seeing as you mention buzzards as well?

I have gone through the rspb site and I think it is a nightjar. The sound, more noise at night, unusual flight pattern and can be seen in the Brecklands. It wasn't close enough to see if it had white spots.

Glad you think the radio description fits To think, for two weeks I decided it was noisy bats

As others have said Bren- nice site.

Problem with most sites is that you only get to hear their main call, not mating calls etc , and only for a few seconds which makes Id more difficult.

I'm utter rubbish at remembering bird calls and have forgotten their song/ call until I hear it again...very frustrating!
I clearly don't have a musical ear...wish I did because they are so beautiful.

Quiz, it's easy so no cheating! I have loads of bird nest boxes in the garden and on clearing them out last year I found this, I haven't got the heart to throw it away. One didn't hatch.

It was only when I looked at the second pic and got an idea of size I worked it out

Do many people keep random wildlife bits? I have part of a shed snake skin from a grass snake. No purpose, just didn't like to get rid of it

I do remember dial radios but I'm old enough to have forgotten they existed.............and I thought a Night jar was somewhere to keep your teeth.

I keep old nests too - such works of art it would be wrong to chuck them.
