Where have all the frogs gone?

Yesterday my pond was choc-a-bloc with frogs...



But now all the frogs have vanished! I can't understand it and miss them a lot! Yesterday they didn't look like they were going anywhere soon and now they've all gone I don't think something could have eaten them all, not all of them surely! The pond is quite deep so they could escape from a heron.

Any ideas?

I think they all might have had some 'fun' and have now gone off to eat. You got spawn in the pond now?

Just two clumps, but its been there for a while, there should be a lot more.

Weirdly all the frogs reappeared this afternoon, croaking like mad! Louder than ever! The frog chorus is deafening from our back door, and it's not even near the pond!

So I'm happy again!

Probably had some R&R and returned to business (temperature?).

Mine are just starting to arrive with a little muted croaking - no pirhana fest yet (splashing not eating)

The temperature hasn't really changed much of late. It's so mysterious how they all seemed to vanish without trace! Must've been having a snooze at the bottom of the pond maybe! lol

Today I was absolutely dismayed to see one of my hens charging about with half a frog in her beak!!! So something is after them and I think it might be magpies snapping them up as they leave the pond because we heard a lots of magpie screeches this morning. We don't have a huge amount of magpies round here though. But I think a fox or a heron would just swallow the frog whole.

There is a lot shrubs and plants etc around the pond but perhaps I should put more rocks and logs and things to stop the magpies or whatever it is.

Oh no...I googled it and hens can and do catch and eat frogs!!!

We have had a pond for about 15 years and every year it's the same. Absolute mayhem for about 3 weeks and then literally overnight they all vanish !! They'll be hiding somewhere in your garden - ours tend to congregate under our shed.! Anyway you'll
have lots of little babies to watch over soon!!!

During the last week there have been upwards of 40 partying in the pond here. Far more spawn this year than there was last.

That's good to hear because my frog pond is very quiet, I've a horrible feeling my hens ate the lot I hope I'm wrong.

There's quite a lot of frog spawn but there's usually a lot more...in the days before my hens arrived on the scene. I feel bad for introducing them now and upsetting the frog population.
