As Two Sheds said, maybe it is because its been very cold. This weekend I spotted a few bees and a dragonfly, so finger cross. We have a wee pond and a small woodland area, but we do not have many flowers. Next year, I will plant more flowers to create a better environment for bees and other insects, because we have lots of green, but barely flowers.

My Broad beans that flowered initially about 4 weeks ago didn't set due to the poor weather here (France) and lack of insects around. I've now had a lot of new growth and flowers that are forming pods. Highlight though has been a Swallowtail on the Scabious! What a gorgeous butterfly.Last edited by zazen999; 19-08-2013, 07:10 AM.Follow my progress in gardening at altitude in France www.750metres.net

I heard it said on TV sait the bee population was down 30% this year, from a pooor few years.Originally posted by Two_Sheds View Post
Something as simple as the council allowing grass verges to grow tall & flower, would be hugely beneficial to our struggling insects.
No insects = no birds or bats
What polinates most of our plants? Is it mostly bees, or are they just a small section of the polinators?

Good question. Just did a quick researchand learnt that from bats to butterflies help to pollinate plants. Looking forward to read the answers of the experts.Originally posted by Fluorescent green View PostI heard it said on TV sait the bee population was down 30% this year, from a pooor few years.
