  • What is this?

I met a new little creature in my garden today, it was quite friendly but I forgot to ask its name... lol.

I have googled until my hearts content and I can not find it, my AA wildlife book doesn't have it either, can anyone of you help me to identify it please. The photo is a blurred but you can just about make out its shape, it was black with a red patch on its back, a unique shape which looked like a hard shell (its definatley some type of beetle... I think!) Just around the edge of its back under the hard shell it was stripey. It was about 3/4 of an inch in length.

be gentle if you pick it up - they're also known as stink beetles and it lasts for ages! Yes, 1st hand experience. I love them, especially the emerald green ones.

They do suck sap from some plants but they're very pretty & I've never noticed them becoming a problem in my garden.
