  • Knapweed

I'd like to encourage butterflys into my garden.

Is knapweed good? Can I purchase this from garden centre?

It's brilliabnt. I have a garden centre Greater Knapweed and you can't shift for bees and butterflies. They love it.

Coneflowers are very good too for butterflies. I find that the goldfinches love the seeds of knapweed. Try oregano for bees, they flower for a long time and you can use the leaves for cooking.

You can get seeds for Centaurea - a cultivated form: very pretty.
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

Yes, it's a fantastic bee plant, and easy to grow from seed if you can't find any plants. Be warned though, it self seeds easily, even in lawns. Well worth the trouble of removing any unwanted ones though!

We had the wild knapweed on our wildflower meadow. It was the back part which we fenced and gave over to the chickens. They completely trashed it!
