  • Was it his Stag night?

    Comment

    • Well, this may be a common sight for you folks in south England (or maybe wider UK and Ireland too? I'm not sure) but it's the first time I've ever come across a hummingbird hawk moth over here. What a strange little creature, we were captivated!

      • We rarely see them on the colder east side, nice image, one of our favourites too.

        • Had a visitor in the kitchen today! By far the biggest hornet I've seen. Thought it was an Asian hornet at first but its a European one.

It didn't stay still long enough to pose for a photo!

          • Have never seen a hummingbird moth but I do remember the hoo ha a few years back when people thought they had seen an actual hummingbird! Lovely things. I have also never seen a hornet, thank goodness!

            • Saw this bird on the ground a few days ago, under the shelter of a clump of large trees. Can anyone identify it and tell me why it was on the ground? I hope it wasn't injured, and I don't know enough about whether it might be a ground nesting species.

              • Looks like a baby blackbird to me...no idea why it's on the ground though, exhaustion maybe?

                • Young magpie maybe? The parents will probably feed it there.
