  • Hoverflies love lilies

    Wow!
23 hoverflies on the one lily ... and I have 6 lilies in flower, each of them smothered in hoverflies, with dozens more trapped in the plastic greenhouses

Wow - it seems to be the year of the hoverfly.
My whole garden is moving with them, every flower is covered with them.
I can't see any aphids so don't know what the attraction is.

The sad thing is when I leave my conservatory door and windows open - and I have to - they swarm in there but can't find their way back out. I rescue dozens every day but find hundreds dead. Really upsetting but I don't know what to do. I can't put insect screen on all the windows - there's about 2 dozen.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

I have never experienced so many hoverflies - it really is a plague ! Poor little things will most likely end up as part of a swallow's meal as other kinds of flies have been far less numerous this year so far.

        Nice photo!

Hoverflies are cool. They look like pilots with their big goggle eyes.

I watched one get munched by a damsel fly on a branch a foot away from me a few weeks ago. Shame for it, but the damsel fly looked like he enjoyed it.

Loads of hoverflies here too, and ladybirds. As to why the lack of aphids, maybe our friends have already been busy eating.
