I only have sunflower hearts, which I order 2X 20kg at a time on eBay. Lasts for ages and far cheaper than little packets. Next door does mixed seeds and suet.
The woodpeckers do check the hollow tops of canes and I have seen plenty of their holes in dead branches, which I have left up. They visit nearly every day.
The feeders have accumulated over time. The Roamwild anti-squirrel one also works on parakeets. The mesh one suffers from the damp and I might reload it with suet balls. I got it as nuthatches can feed head down on it, which they can't do on ordinary feeders.
The stand is made from 24mm and 15mm copper pipe with cup hooks. I originally used a soldered joint but it wasn't man enough.

    • I can't remember if I posted this before from 2022.
I once had to let out three feral pigeons in one go!
I have had to leave one door off at night in summer as kept catching hedgehogs! Click image for larger version

      • Gosh! I would never have believed a GS woodpecker would enter a cage like that!

        • This a rather longer video I shot in our forest last year, right at the end the Great Spotted Woodpecker is in evidence, there is a bit of commentary with it.

            • Only watched the opening parts, burnie. Sorry about that. Lovely to see, nevertheless. Must feel really special, being there 'live', so to speak.

                        • Beautiful!
We don’t see many that orange here…our local red squirrels are much darker- especially their tails.

Thanks for sharing Burnie - always uplifting to see red squirrels!

                          • I should say I was the driver for this shot, my wife took the image from the car, then I edited it afterwards, it was a bit dark so I had to lighten it.
