Vegetables to sow between mid-September and October

As per title, I wish to grow some varieties from seed using a polythene covered greenhouse.

Any recommendations for a novice gardener?

Do you mean to grow them permanently in the GH or to start in the GH and plant outside?

No heat unfortunately. Only have one of those cheap arched greenhouses you can get for about �20.

Will be soon constructing a raised bed so will be growing via greenhouse first then planting out.

Alternatively I could grow a couple of crops just using the greenhouse.

You can plant garlic and giant garlic now and broad beans can be sown in a month of two.
Perhaps start off some winter lettuces but there isn't a lot that will put on much growth over the winter.

You could try the garden centre for some winter brassicas but I think it's too late to start from seed.

The biggest issue now is hours of daylight. We are at the equinox, so from tomorrow until 21st March the nights are longer than the days, and on a downhill slide until 21st December.

Winter lettuces such as Winter Density are a possibility (I've just sown some for my friend's greenhouse) - I start them off indoors to get them growing on. You need the winter varieties that are bred for low light levels.

You could sow corn salad (also called lambs lettuce) outdoors now - it doesn't need much light and will grow very slowly over winter to give you salad leaves in early spring. Winter spinach is another possibility, again for a spring crop as you won't get much growth in actual winter. I wouldn't put this in a small greenhouse though as if it gets hot it will bolt.

Japanese onions and broad beans are soon to be planted on my plot. A recommendation i can make for a polytunnel is The Sutton dwarf broad beans. I grew them last winter in the greenhouse and had a really good crop.
