Going well so far... What's next?

So far I�ve managed avoid killing my butternut squash or my chillies (unsure about the garlic, it doesn�t look happy!) and I�ve got an itch to grow something else. I realise it�s quite late in the year already, but I�m interested to know what things I can start now and will have enough time to grow this year? Does anyone have any recommendations? I�m open to anything really, as long as it�s beginner friendly (easy!) and is happy being grown in an 18� border along the side of the fence.

If you've got an itch it could be nettle rash so try dock leaves .

or how about things like Salad leaves, spinach, chard, miners lettuce, lambs lettuce, chicory, dandelion, radish, mustards.

I sowed a few courgettes yesterday - The packet said 46 days from germination to harvest how about some slug food ... sorry - dwarf french beans

Other options: autumn broccoli and winter cabbages, even carrots depending on the depth and quality of the soil. Lardman's suggestion of French beans is another good one. Good French beans are expensive to buy here, so they're always on my list.

I ended up buying a giant 33cm pot and putting some carrots and some dwarf french beans in it. And then I put ~10 radishes and beetroots in the border of the garden.

Now I just have to figure out how to stop next door's cat from crapping on everything!

It's going quite well so far!!

One of the two french beans that I planted is now maybe 2cm high and growing quite quickly. The carrots are coming along too, with some leaves poking out the compost. The Radishes are loving life and are now around 3-4 cm high, and the beetroots that didn't get dug up by the neighbour's stupid cat are now visible too, but are still very small.

I'm much more excited than I should be I think. I find myself going out and checking on it all every morning before work and then when I get home too. Can't wait to have a nice beef stew with home grown carrots and beetroot (I've never tried beetroot before). Only thing I'll be missing is potatoes!
