I don't use cells for beans. You can make paper pots from newspaper for these or toilet roll tubes.

how often should I water is it as simple as when cells are dry ?

I think I will experiment on herbs , spring onions , dwarf green beans ( you can get extra deep cells for these )

Would this device suffice with the watering of the cells

Also should you use one seed per cell , ir a couple in tiny instances where the seeds are microscopic such as Thai basil

I sow about 13 - 15 Spring Onions in a vending machine cup and use a small coke bottle with holes in the cap made with a mapping pin which acts the same as what you are going to buy from Amazon. I also use the same caps with mapping pin holes on 2 litre bottles.

you can see the water / moisture in the soil on the sides of the vending machine cups.

Thanks Cadalot I will use this that method , but I received cells , so I would like to use these first , How many should I put in a 24 cell , are spring onions easy to transplant

No problem just sow them about 6 - 8mm apart in the module and form a bunch, they grow like grass and when they are a reasonable size you just sow them as a bunch



There is a couple of weeks between each tray in the photo and the ones in the front were nearly ready to go in the ground, the other good thing about vending machine cups is that I use a bulb planter to make the hole the onions will go into.

They look great! I have never succeeded in getting spring onions to do anything other than emulate grass. I almost feel like trying again looking at that but ... maybe next year.

Where can you place your cells , how often should you water them ? is 24 cell a good enough number.

If I am growin herbs how many cells should I put in a pot ?

Here are my Climbing French beans and courgettes/butternut squash. They were sown on 29th May and were showing within 7 days.
They were sown in modules of various sizes - whatever was lying around. The beans are 2 to a module as they are old seeds and I didn't expect them to germinate so well!
Some of the courgettes are also 2 to a module for the same reason.

I filled the modules with new multipurpose compost (any big lumps removed)..
Put the modules in gravel trays (no holes) and filled the trays with water. Left them to stand until the surface of the compost changed colour to show it was damp.
Took the modules out of the trays and let them drain.
Emptied the water out of the trays and put the modules back in.
Sowed the seeds into the modules.
Covered the seeds with plastic lids (bags would do)
Left them alone until they germinated - no watering! and removed the lids.
The courgettes have not been watered since 29th May; the beans had water in the tray a couple of days ago.
They're in a lean to greenhouse that loses the sun in the afternoon.

I'd use the same method whatever I was sowing, just varying the number of seeds per module. A pinch of small seeds or 4 seeds like cabbage.

That's all there is to it.

Is it easy to take the cells out once filled with soil in order to extract the water ?

Also I dont have a green house will any room do ?

How many of the cells from oyu picture would you eventually sow in a pot as I really dont have anywhere I can sow in Soil that catches enough sun.

I don't understand what you mean by "extract the water"? You lift the modules as one, set them aside, pour off the water and put the modules back in the tray.
Most seeds don't need light to germinate but they need good light when they have to stop them going leggy.
I don't grow courgettes and beans in pots so can't tell you how many. I put the photos up to show you how I sow seeds in modules - and they were all I had handy!

I'll have you know that there are 3 labels in the courgette tray, but 2 are back to back behind the one you can see Each label is positioned to tell me which seeds are where in the tray, so everything in front of the writing has those seeds. It means I can plant several different things in one lot of modules and know which is which.
And...............the labels are reusable 'cos they don't specify which courgettes they are - the detail is in my diary!
