First Asparagus

Had my one spear from the old garden a couple of days ago.
It'll be a while before the house is on the market yet so I should get to harvest a nice crop - think it's about 5 years old now.

Got to start all over again in the new house.

For those of you who are waiting patiently - perfect with a splash of olive oil and flaked sea salt.
The Mondeo (green spears) was in the wrong place so moved it last December, really pleased how well it's doing.

Only planted mine this year so a few years to wait yet, this bed was prepared properly, unlike a previous bed that produced zero.
Looking good so far.
That Mondeo looks good!

What variety are the purple ones?

I've got Mondeo and Guelph Millennium.

Mine are:-
Pacific Purple & Gijnlim which should spread harvesting as one is late and one is early.( 1/2 of the early ones are shaded for about an hour a day, so I should be cropping over 8 weeks(at least that is the plan)

Pacific Purple, this is their first proper year for harvesting.

Will be trying my first asparagus of the year tomorrow, but if I don't get a decent crop this year they will be getting dumped as I only had one picking from five plants last year, this will be their fourth year so here's hoping

Rary! They do take a little time to get established and produce a decent crop, mine are now on year 4, or is it 5?

But find once the ferns start to discolour and start wilting, chopping them off at base level and covering the bed in a 1 to 2 inch layer of a 50/50 mix of well rotted manure and home made compost gets them off to a flyer the following year!

I'm on my 1st year, a couple of spears have grown then died. Not too worried as next year will be the tester.
