What I did today - 2017

Gave the potted stuff it's weekly feed, and did the rounds collecting up all the snails from their regular haunts - at least another 30 whoppers - do they have a homing instinct, or are these a new generation of snails every week?

Potted on more basil thats rooted after being pinched out from the parent plants, fed toms, cucs and courgettes, picked and froze runner beans along with more blackberries.

Bario - mine don't get the chance to return (unless they can come back as spirits?! ) - so I think they just have superb regeneration rates!!

Meant to say (!!) I had a very productive weekend of tidying, harvesting and planting - and managed a lovely balance of the three. Finally feeling like I'm on top of existing plants, but still lots of digging to do.

OH spent all weekend trying (and failing) to remove a conifer stump

Planted and potted some Hollyhocks. Dead headed. Gave the compost a turn

Picked some windfalls, and a few more apples from the tree where they were getting overcrowded. Made 7lb crumble mix, and still have 3 mixing bowls full to go

Noticed blight-like spots appearing on some Charlotte leaves, so cut back the haulms to the ground. They've already flowered and produced berries, so hopefully there's a crop down there.
Dug up one Pink Fir Apple plant to see if they're ready - some ok sized spuds there - I knew they were a knobbly variety, but these are ridiculously knobbly!
Felt a bit like Autumn down there this morning.

I cleared a load more ground yesterday - today I've just watched the rain pour down

Planted a cherry tree and the last 3 hazelnuts on the front lawn, cleaned out the 3 chicken houses, cut the hedge between the back lawn and the orchard and did a lot of watering.

Monday at the hotment with the grand-daughter. Watering the glass shed, picked 4 cucumbers and a handful of tomatoes. Then picked runner and french beans. French beans are her absolute favourite so she was very excited about those. Runner beans are my absolute favourite so I was equally excited (I ate mine for supper last night - first feast of the season ). Then, she picked an apple from the tree - Katy variety -I peeled it for her with my pen-knife and she wolfed it down. Then we picked 6 more for her to take home for Mummy and Daddy. I want her to have positive memories of gardens and gardening, like I do, so that she will want to have her own garden when she is older. No need to water anything at home apart from greenhouse because it has rained and rained - again!

Picked a few beetroot for tonight's dinner, and sowed a tub of Spring onions - these'll probably go in the tunnel to overwinter once the toms come out.
Re-homed a rhubarb plant next to it's bigger neighbour. I've been trying to grow this rhubarb for years, it was a feeble looking specimen when I got my plot. I tried splitting, feeding, pampering, but to no avail so last year I dug it up and flung it onto a 'I'll get to it someday' area of the plot, along with a load of weeds, prunings etc. So guess what happened it's positively thriving, I've even harvested a few stalks. So I'm now leaving it well alone, and working it into my plot layout - I love the sculptural aspect of it.

Had been planning a trip to the plot to water but nature beat me to it!

Planted the new Lilac, found a home for the 3 Berberis, did some planning for a spotspot for my Fuschia and Gunnera and finally tidied up around the honeysuckle.

No veggie gardening yesterday but did plant out a Blueberry at my house, along with cutting the lawn, tying in the honeysuckle to my obelisk, deadheading the roses and pinks and hacking back a Rhododenron that was aiming for world domination.

Weeded/tidied up the main brassica bed - PSB is now stretching the netting on the top of the cage, not sure what to do about that!
Weeded and raked over a patch in one of the raised beds and broadcast sowed some spinach, not expecting much from this, but you never know!
Went round and pulled a few weeds - just pulling a few every day is keeping them at bay.
