sarpo mira anyone growen them and other questions

I'm thinking of growing them because of the potato blight resistance , but what is the taste like and yield
I like Picasso because of the size of crop and taste but keep getting blight, but do get a reasonable crop
does anyone plant their pots now , some I left in the ground have a better crop the next year

I have grown Sarpo Mira and find they give good crops of big potatoes. The taste is not as good as Desiree in my opinion (I have not grown Picasso).

If you get blight it is not a good idea to leave potatoes in the ground for the next year. This is the way that blight overwinters and doing this will mean you are much more likely to get blight again next year.

I've grown a number of spuds from the Sarpo range. TBH Mira was least tasty and benefited from harvesting at 22 weeks so they didn't grow too big and become rock hard. I did find, however, that all are very blight resistant.
Don't know if these varieties are still available but I grew -
Una - really nice spud for all uses but was prone to slugs
Blue Danube - again very nice and good for all uses but prone to scab
Kifli - still grow these, store really well, good for everything except mashing, good slug resistance
Axona - a refined Mira, tended to be very floury and dry but good for oven chips, good slug resistance
Mira - dry and floury, good slug resistance

As with all taters though it depends very much on soil, weather etc. hope this helps.

My two'pennorth: I grew Sarpo Mira and Axona this year. Axona were far better than Mira which were very floury and dry. Azona had better slug resistance than Mira (grown side by side). If you can get them, Alouette (not a sarpo variety) have some blight resistance, good slug resistance and are very tasty.

All the above is probably impacted by soil too - mine is London clay which has been heavily manured.

Strange, I grew Mira and Axona side by side - I much preferred the taste and texture of the Sarpo Mira, which also produced about twice the harvest.

I grew Mira Axons, Blue Kifli & Blue Danube which as mentionedvery nice and good for all uses but prone to scab. There was an offer on last year on trial packs, I haven't seen the same offer yet.

Sarpo Mira huge cropper is a lovely dry spud but is lacking a bit in the taste stakes. However mashed with grated Scottish cheddar takes some beating.

Sarpo varieties keep growing until you cut the tops off. I've grown Mira and Axona, good crops of large potatoes. I found Axona more susceptible to slugs. I don't grow them any more, we just found the skins grew really hard on our ground and were like razor blades when cooked.

The variety I use is Cara, it grows well a second early but, if it doesn't get blight (and it does seem pretty good in the resistance stakes here) it grows on and it's a nice eating potato (as the bl**dy rats proved this year when the ate the lot.)

My allotment isn't in an area renowned for blight. I just wonder though. with the milder weather and supposed climate change whether the blight zones will change?
I hope not as from what I can see the blight resistant varieties are fairly limited and i hear very little about how tasteful they are.

We are in a very bad blight area; as I said have come to Cara and Blight Watch to decide when to take the tops off.
