Sowing in teabags!

As the non-tea-drinking owner of lots of old, unused teabags I'm thinking of ways to use them in the garden.
As a last resort they'll be added to the compost heap but............has anyone tried sowing seeds in them - like jiffy pellets?
I found this Grow a Tea Bag Garden – Kiwi Conservation Club for used tea bags.

Of course you have to give it a go VC.

The only things I know about tea bags is that my Grandad used them for his roses, they are high in tannin and they are good for turning paper oldie worldie when a kid drops a last minute project in your lap.

Do you think all seeds like that level of tannin?

When i make a cuppa at the allotment I always put the used tea bag in the pot I've got my Blueberry bush in. I've got a sneaking feeling they are acid so should go well with my ericaceous compost in the blueberry pot.........hopefully!

Looks interesting VC found a few more articles on google but I won't be joining you though we use loose leaf tea.

I've started



Soaked 18 tea bags in hot (not boiling) water for a few minutes while I lined the mushroom punnets with kitchen roll.

Punnet on the left.
12 teabags, excess liquid squeezed out and stood on end with a slit cut in the top for the seeds. 6 have 2 Bijou mangetout in each, the other 6 have a Wizard Field bean.

6 teabags, squeezed, laid flat and sprinkled with mixed lettuce seeds.

I'll put them inside a plastic bag and keep them indoors until they germinate.

A good idea VC but I would go for tea bags that have been used then washed out as like Snadger I think they would be acidic being from the Camellia sinensis which is an acid loving plant

They should germinate within a week or so ...........fingers crossed!
If not, I'll try again with "used" bags. They're actually jasmine, lemon and other flavoured teas with a tealeaf base (if you know what I mean!)

I tried it a few years back but no luck..........come to think of it, there's not a lot I haven't tried.........

Jasmine, lemon, that's not tea that's scent....i think..

It didn't work
The tea bags grew mould, not lettuce
I guess they held too much water. The peas and beans have swelled but there's no sign of germination. Some mould on the beans too.
Ah well, back to cutting the bags open and adding the tea leaves to the compost.

How about doing a half and half with MPC?

Have another go,only squeeze out the liquid before sowing,so they only damp.....................................right now't ventured ext,just put a few bits in some,let nature do her best,
