Chillies - growing and overwintering 2017

I would never grow a chilli plant near a radiator...the fluctuating temps really will make a difference. And the direct heat from it will cause those leaves to curl. Take it away from the radiator and just place it somewhere sunny.

When you keep a plant warm the temperature needs to stay the same day and night.

Thanks for the advice; I still have a lot to learn! The grow light goes off when the radiator goes off so I thought it was like natural day and night fluctuations but I suppose most chillies come from the tropics where the temperature doesn't drop much at night.

I put them on the windowsill when it's a sunny day but last week, for example, we didn't see the sun for days on end and it was very dark and gloomy so I thought they were better staying under the growlight.

My little ones aren't doing to bad, but they will be doing better soon, a new heat mat is on the way for them .

Still a few empty pot to fill but germination is going well in the propagator so should get those pots planted up tomorrow.

And I have some very sad news........Simon didn't make it , neither did tree chilli.

But my over wintering philus blue, ghost and chocolate habanero seem to be doing ok.

Checked and watered my seed tray pots on Sunday (8 days after sowing), one tray so far, no a sign of anything at all, not even a bump in the compost.
Checked last night (24hrs later), and eight pots have suddenly burst into life! My Joe's Long, Espelette, and Paper Lantern have all come through in perfect unison Usually much more sporadic than that.. Still, I'm not complaining
No sign of any of the Trinidads but I really would've been amazed if anything were stirring there so soon.

Not done my 2nd tray yet, but they are all milder varieties and will grow quicker so plenty of time yet, and I'm still well ahead of my normal sowing period.


(Doesn't matter how many times I've done it before, I love how there's always that little thrill when seedlings first appear)...

My basque red & dedo des mocha are starting to touch the top of the propogater. It's in a cold porch (I put blankets over at night) so can't keep them in there with the lid off.

Would they be ok on a windowsill? I have a choice of East facing with curtains & a radiator under, or West facing with no curtains & no radiator. Or on a sideboard or above a fireplace with indirect light.

Thanks Ms-T. Yes - planning to save seeds from them, really like the sound of them, especially as I've never had much luck with peppers - those and the achocha fat baby (if it works) are going to be my peppers substitute if peppers fail again this year

All of mine seem to be progressing well so far with some of the hotter ones not up yet..

About 32 varieties up and growing but no sign of anything on Habanero White, Habanero Chocolate, Turbo Pube X Alberto's Locoto or Numex Bailey Piquin so far...

today has been a mixed day ,first i found out my first chilli seedling in a rockwall cube has its roots pushing out the bottom which means its ready to go in my hydro ,then i started filling up the unit with water and found it has a crack in one corner and is leaking so im now busy trying to find a sealent to patch it up ,swings and roundabouts , cheers

I am sorry to say I have lost my patience on the Hungarian hot wax
After 2 attempts of trying to germinate still no joy.
I will keep to just my 3 varieties.

Don't know how all you others have the patience for all your varieties.

I will concentrate on my other 3 and maybe try another variety in the near future.
