as the rain has stopped and some sun has arrived I thought I would lift my onions and put them in the greenhouse to dry off, alas, the weather has done for me, two thirds of the onions have been eaten from underneath by , I presume , slugs, so a bucket and a half of "bored" onions have been consigned to the bin. they looked fine until I started pulling them up and they didn't feel a proper weight, too light and it was a real pain to see so many wrecked, if it carries on like this I will just grow slugs..

Oh Buffs! Poor you ........ so disheartening after all the months of tlc ...... Are you late in lifting your onions ...? I lifted mine early August inbetween wet days ......

Oh dear - I think getting to the harvesting stage and then discovering that things are not as they seem is probably the worst aspect of growing veg. I remember a couple of years ago having a crop of peas that looked great until I discovered pea moth grubs in almost every pod.

The good thing is that every year is different and as this year has been exceptionally sluggy, hopefully next year your onions will not have the same problem.

For me, I think the biggest bonus this year has been the fruit, everything has been fantastic.

It seems to me that every year something's do well and others fail and it seems to change from year to year.

For me this year produced better than normal peas, caulis, onions, runner beans, baby cucumbers and baby leeks. The spring cabbage and curly kale look promising.

The down side was only 2 calabrese, 10 lettuce all year (thank goodness for mesclun), potato harvest weight down and PSB failure.

Everything else was pretty much average.

Last year I only had a couple of courgettes from each plant this year its more like what shall we have with our courgettes today every time I go outside theres another one ready to pick I do love courgettes.
Runner beans have done well beetroot not so good, mooli went to seed early on swede are looking good though so are the parsnips.

Runner beans, carrots and tomatoes all really good this year.
Lettuces hit and miss, radishes - forget it.
Onions had their last chance and failed
Potato yield, not good at all
Last year potatoes were prolific, tomatoes rubbish

My best crop has been slugs and snails this year. No matter what I do they still keep coming. Over 100 frogs in garden pond counted in March when spawning but still everywhere.
Need to find a recipe for them [not the frogs]

For me, its been tomatoes! Thanks to the warm, dry spell we've had here in essex, the threatening blight was halted, and my toms have been prolific. The potatoes were disasterous however.

My potatoes have also been poor this year, I think the late April frost was to blame for putting them back just as they were getting going. As well as the drop in yield they were also susceptible to blackleg - even Sarpo Mira got it and its supposed to be resistant. Then of course the later planted ones got blight. Can't win em all!

Peas, beans, courgettes (despite copious quantities of mildew), tomatoes, peppers and onions all been good this year for me.
