    Ah I see. That answers it then. Was wondering if it was something to do with what he had been growing e.g blueberries. I've heard people bury cans, nails etc in the soil to help the acidity

                Awww, great job 1Bee.....! .............Have you considered saving all your newly dug-up 'treasure' and selling it to the local scrap dealer....!!!!
                Looks like it could fund your seed buying for at least the next season..!!!
