Uchiki Kuri

I was wondering how to tell when these are ripe and what happens if you leave them growing too long?
I have a few and they are growing like wild fire.

They tend to get very orange and the skins start to harden. I have never had one that has been growing too long but they will ripen on the vine so I wouldn't worry too much.

The stems go corky and the fruit ripens to deep orange, these were harvested mid October but I guess it depends on the seasons weather and your location. I'd say let them mellow on the vine as long as you can.

My favourite babies! Mind you, I've never got to Mr Bones' barrowload's size....

I remember reading somewhere about the stems going 'corky' and not having a clue what they meant until I walked up to one of my plants one autumn and went, "oooooh. Corky." It was obvious when it happened.

Oh my. I'm growing these for the first time this year. I wasn't expecting them to be so big I think my spare room may have to turn in to a pumpkin store.

I can't believe how prolific the growth of the plants is, I reckon you could almost watch them grow.

I grew them on my new allotment plot on some cooch grass riddled soil.
Covered with manure, then black plastic sheet and plants in holes cut in the sheet.
