Sweetcorn again....

I don't soak either.. mine germinated in a cold greenhouse and only one misfire in each batch, and the seed is either last year's or the year before.. very good,very cheap seed from moles.
I think we've had the last frost here, although we are pretty warm generally.. tonight is the potential chilly one but I think it'll only hit 6ish.. maybe a 5 so we should be ok.. it was quite chilly last night, I spent it outside!

My sweetcorn is plenty big enough to plant out. I was a bit optimistic, starting them third week of April.

It's cold here today and tonight is the big frost risk, but I'll be bringing the pots outside in the daytime from tomorrow or Monday, as soon as the sun comes out again.

I put 11 pots under my fish tank light & 11 pots out in the blow away (if I put 22 pots under the fish tank light it would be cover the whole tank) The fish tank ones germinated in about 4 days or something,the pots outside were doing nothing obvious,so I put the germinated ones in my daughters sunny window & the 11 from outside under the lights,they're all roughly the same size now,one didn't germinate (I just had a poke in the pot,found the sweetcorn seed it feels all rubbery like). Wonder why that one didn't want to grow....All mine are indoors until it warms up again,they're very small.

All curcurbits in pots on the window sill, beans in the GH, Sweetcorn will just have to shove in somewhere.

It's 7 deg tonight and i planted mine out today I was up the plot midweek taking stuff out that I'd already planted because this weekend is cooler but checking the weather next week it's not exactly getting warm and God knows how long that could drag on for so there in, were nearly mid may so that's good enough for me

Yep. Metcheck is always more pessimistic than the BBC. It currently shows tonight's minimum as 2 degrees, with 100% risk of ground frost. (Metcheck.com - Hang On.. Let's find your location first...). So I've covered over my spuds this afternoon just in case they are right.

February is really earn for sweetcorn, isn't it? Did you have it in a propagator? I had mine in a cold frame sown in early April (too early, too cold) and it popped up a few weeks ago. I've only grown it once before but transplanted it and it was fine.

i always prefer to direct seed my corn instead starting them in pots.

The sweetcorn I sowed on 14th May ~ in modules in the greenhouse ~ had started to germinate on 18th May Eleven of the sixteen sown were up and hopefully the other five will be up when I go up later today (missed yesterday as I was working).

Unlike the rest of the UK we've had no rain since 2nd and it's been predominantly sunny and warm which, I think, has really helped with germination.

Update.

After planting the corn out about a week ago all of them look dead...

Each one looks like they have been snapped over

I detangled all of their roots very carefully in water which was quite easy, put in the fungi and ecothrive but still... dead!

Will never buy them as seedlings from a shop again and wouldnt recommend it :/

What I perosnaly found last year is that sweetcorn seem to be one of those plants that need to be hardened off.

I grew them under cover and they looked great but were soft and any wind just severely knocked them about, so much so that I lost 50% off them

This year Ive had them in the cold frame for a couple a weeks, it seems to be stunted them abit compared to what im used to growing indoors but atleast there are sturdy little plants.

Time will tell I suppose.
