Indoor Cucumbers

Hi

Which varieties do folks recommend? Ive only grown outdoor ones before but they didnt do that much last year so trying inside ones.

Im looking for one which is an all female variety

I don't grow many F1 plants but indoor cucumbers are the ones I do. I've tried others and had some disasters - had some horrible White ones that threw out hundreds of male and female flowers and I couldn't keep up - they were disgusting! So I only grow carmen or telegraph for your typical cue, the small lunch box size I've grown picolino, cucino. All good.

I'm growing poonam khera which is an indian cucumber very thin with a pale skin. Have eaten them in India and the have a really crunchy texture and good taste. Also I don't need to peel them unlike the dark skinned ones. Never grown them before but sowed 6 seeds ( some for mu mum too ). Will let you know how I get on with them.

Last year I grew a variety called Hana which I bought from Homebase as two newly-germinated seedlings. Smooth fruits (?) that were SO sweet and juicy....and kept in the fridge for a good couple of weeks no problem Was just in my local store this morning and they've got them in again so I'm tempted to treat myself to one again (or two as they come in trays of two )

Just googled it and it IS an F1 female variety.

Scarlet, WOW, that is a beast!!! Did you enter that in the vine comp. last year?!

My endorsement is for Bella F1. Grown two years on the trot, more than likely grow again this year as I've had no issues with it (if it ain't broke and all that ). Grows quickly, good cropper, good length on the fruits (12" easy), no problems with mildew or pests that I've noticed.

White cucumbers are quite rank and the one I grew wasn't even a true white as per the photo on the seed packet, more a dirty cream.


A question I have relating to storage is this: I've noticed the cucumbers I've grown, while being tasty and superior to pretty much all shop bought specimens, do not have the same keeping qualities. Mine start going soft after a couple of days, in fridge or on counter - supermarket ones retain their firmness for much longer. Just me or an answerable quandary?

You can just cut half the fruit off the plant,leave the other half hanging on there. Mine last longer not in the fridge,they've never been at that temperature in their life.
I'd recommend carmen too,I always grow it in my kitchen,grows well never had a problem with them,the family think the taste is great,none of that chemical aftertaste like the shops sell.

Cor! I really fancy those Exploding Cucumbers! Unfortunately I haven't got enough room this year so I'll just have to make a note of the scientific name and grow them next year

haha I didn't even see that Gilly, though they come with a warning to wear safety glasses due to exploding seeds being shot at ya LOL Maybe next year
