Onion set timing question

This is probably a stupid question.
I was hoping to get my onion sets at the edible garden show, at the beginning of March. But will I be to late if I wait till then? Should I just order online like normal?
Told you it was stupid! I'm a bit out of sink with everything, as I didn't do any growing last year .

Nope that's about the right time otherwise you will be too early I think personally . Onion sets go in about March and if you order them online they might either turn up too early or too late. With getting them at March at least they will be able to go straight in and also you will be able to see the onion sets before you actually get them .

I planted mine on the 30th March last year, which is a bit later than usual as it was a cold Spring. Early March sounds ideal.

Don't know if you are getting confused with Autumn sowing sets SP but as said, March should be fine for Spring sown sets.

I got some onion sets from Wilko the other week ~ Stuttgarter ~ and currently have them in a tub in an unheated room. Should I wait until late March to plant them direct into the ground or would it be worth me putting them into modules in the greenhouse now to give them a headstart?

I started mine off in modules last year & they were fine. I find that if I plant them direct into the ground, they push themselves out.

As with most things, what you do should depend on the conditions in your plot. I planted my onion sets at the beginning of this week. I don't have space for 100 modules of onions so they go straight into the ground, under fleece. I bury the whole onion including the top and the fleece stops the cat digging them up and the birds pulling them out as well as keeping them warmer.

However, I am planting into soil which is on top of the foundations of an old patio. Below the soil is a layer of sand and it drains like a sieve, and it is also full of tree roots from the nearby leylandii hedge which take away moisture. It is also higher up than the rest of the garden. The weather has been unusually warm and I would normally plant these in February. I reasoned that keeping the bag of sets in a warm house (or shop) then putting them out in 2 or 3 weeks time when it might be colder was worse than doing it now. If your soil is cold and waterlogged, don't bother as the sets will probably rot before they grow.

My Autumn onion sets are growing away outdoors. Planted them out in September. Red Baron snd Shynsu. (Sp) but you know what I mean.

Couldn't plant yet if I wanted too Marshalls haven't sent any out yet. They will come as usual late next month and will go in early/mid March weather dependant.
