What I did today - 2016

Planted out red lettuces

Made an egg retrieving hatch for my chicken coop. Fed my toms with a seaweed mix. Scrounged a lump of tin sheeting for the coop roof.

Can you take over his plot? That would save you digging up the tree!

Oh god no! I started with half a plot at christmas, and got the second half at easter, which has remained largely untouched, as it needs fencing and a big hole filling in first (winter job). Plus i think there is a waiting list on our site.

Nothing much today - sowed 4 mini trays of white Welsh Onions, Red Welsh Onions ad Chinese Chives and 2 mini trays each of Elefant Leeks and Ailsa Craig onions (yea I know it's the wrong time of year for them but if you don't try things you'll never find out).

Shaved an Elephant.

Planted out 50 three-cornered leek bulbs into a trough. Strange shaped trough to have that many corners.

Harvested courgettes (20 today) and some beans

Trimmed the stragly leaves off the chives - there�s a lot of chives so it wasn't just a quick snip.

Had to build a compost bin to put the yellowing chive leaves in as the other bins are full.

Sorry, that should say shaved an elephant garlic flower. As it's a relative of the leek I want to see if it will produce grass like leeks can (I don't think Elephant garlic produces viable seeds - I've never seen any on sale). I did have one produce topsets earlier (which I've planted and are still hanging in there) so I want to try it again. If it works I'll have to add a couple of verses to this

Also planted 50 Elephant Garlic corms in large pots - these are so unreliable to germinate. I discovered one today I planted last October which is starting to germinate now, of the many bulbils I planted last year I got about 8 plants and the ones this spring only 1. I also planted up 3 of the rounds created by the corms which did grow (one of the other ones is the one I shaved, another is the one that topset, the others are planted in a bed but didn't do too well).

Just having a lunch break but this morning I cut back the overhanging bushes from the paths as I was fed up with being whipped, those days have long gone............then cleared out some plants from the pond & put in Dalek. Picked some JoanJ's & tied the canes to the kite roof as some of them are 8/9ft tall..............

How bigs the hole? You could fill it with an apple tree.

About 4mt x 3m from the path to the fence, then right where it meets the path is it dips down about 2ft - it really isnt very safe. Whatever was there seems to have been dumped in a huge heap at the top of the plot, and is now a cosy foxes den. Now that would be a good spot for a tree, as it wouldnt block anyones sun, and it would be near enough to the other one to help with pollination.

Been outside this evening and despite the sea of pellets, the snugs have eaten all of the above!

Continued moving the detritus and demolition of the old seethrough shack, fences and log store- getting on well as I'm almost at carpet level. Won't be short of wood ash next year.

Today I did a bit of weeding. A lot of tidying in both polytunnles and around the hardening off / overflow bench. Feeling a little happier with the garden now.

Dug up two rows of spuds. What whoppers. This years crop is the best crop I have ever had. Two rows filled a large cardboard box.Only a few had slug damage and these have been kept for next years seed, along with any that were green, I still have about another 16 rows or so to to dig in the tattie field so will need quite a few more boxes at this rate.
Two anomolies spring to mind, if alkali conditions are supposed to cause scab, why aren't my tatties scabbed. The tatties were planted through old plasterboard (Chalk based/gypsum) taken from the inside of the derelict huts
I washed the spuds before storing to make sure there was no slug damage. Why is this supposed to be a no-no?

Sowed some cabbages to overwinter for Spring greens.
Fed and watered my toms and sweetcorn.
Dug up a row of Charlotte spuds - look perfect!
Pulled up all my spent broad bean plants and started clearing the bed of weeds.

Popped back down in my lunch break to dig up my Rooster potatoes - worst crop ever! 90% of the (measly sized) spuds were just hollow slug hotels, and any undamaged ones I seemed to miraculously spear with my fork. I blame the thick straw mulch I put down for the poor crop.

Turned the compost bin and watered the tomatoes and the garden.

That's about it really.

I had a rogue scorzonera growing amidst the onions. Now that their out I figured it was time to dig up the root.

Got about two foot down and the darn thing snapped. Ah well I'll dig it out after it grows back next year.

Pulled off 6 offsets, trimmed the leaves and planted them out to see if they grow. Of course I could end up with a bed of cut and come again root veg.

Pruned my Jersey Kale. Harvested some seeds and trimmed off the rest of the seed branches. Could have done with my lopers but at least I had my pruning saw.

Also picked courgettes, onions, my first red pepper (a sweet banana), my first habanero, French beans.

On the clearance of the back, I finally got to the carpet layer. Underneath that was an MDF layer followed by another carpet layer and another MDF. Looks like at least 1 carpet and 2 MDF layers under this. And this is what they built the greenhouse floor with.
