What I did today - 2016

Today I made a frame over my strawberry bed and stretched netting over it. The first fruits are turning red!

Also I put in canes for my 40 sweet pea plants and tied them all on.

Some serious weeding needed when it's a bit warmer...

Metaphorically swam to the plot to see how things had survived the torrential rain of yesterday and overnight, apart from the beetroot looking a bit battered everything was fine

Weeds will no doubt be on the march now though!

Potted on some sweetcorn so that its a decent size when planted out. Hoed up another four rows of tatties. Lit woodburner and warmed myself up before heading home.

Weather is worse than yesterday. Wet, Windy, Drizzle, misty and very cold. It's like the middle of January out there.

I had so much planned this week in terms of getting the tender stuff all planted and hardening stuff off but Its been so bad I havent been able to get outside at all.

I haven't done a lot this week as the weather has been rubbish. However seeing as I barricaded the veg patch gate yesterday and the ducks still got in I have now put an anti duck strip on it. If they still get in they are 1)Houdini ducks 2) probably deserve to be in there. It still doesn't stop me feeling pants today about the damage they have caused in there

This morning I transplanted some module-grown beetroot into the gaps in my direct sown rows, weeded my roots bed (again!), and sowed a pot of radishes.

It's been raining for the last two days, today is overcast and cold. Flaming June it feels more like flaming Autumn or early Winter out there. The temperature gauge is telling me it's 10.3 decrees C but with the wind chill factor it feels much colder and even I could only last out there without a coat for 5 minutes.

Lettuce don't normally like it too hot, and so far I have not grown any lettuce. NOTE to Self:- Get some lettuce in during March next year and sow at 3 to 4 week intervals.

So now that the cold frame is back in play and as it's lunch time and not raining, I have filled 20 small pots that stand in a capillary matting tray with some Tantan Crisp 'romaine' lettuce with three seeds per pot. according to the back of the pack they are; "A slightly larger Little Gem with its similarly renowned taste. The leaves are more 'bubbled' giving it a distinctive appearance, Matures about 11 weeks from sowing, with delicious , crisp, 'romaine' hearts which stand well and withstand hot summer weather"

Here's hoping we do get some hot Summer weather soon for them to withstand!

Lovely day here today, so potted on the last of my tomatoes. I am gradually whittling them down and am now running out of people to foist them off ....whoops ... give them to. Went to the plot and planted out Romanesco and beetroot. Did a massive watering in the glass shed - that should last until Sunday. Planted out some lettuce in the raised beds at home and did a massive watering here too. Little top up in the morning and they should all be OK until Sunday.

Fell asleep on chair after work. Was reminded by OH I had to take German Shepherd to vet. GS had her toenails clipped and was given some liquid to put in her food for her hip displacement (10 years old!) Another 40 squid down the drain!
Went to allotment late, and checked on hens. It appears I have a 'clucker' sitting on eggs.
Weeded annd dug over an 18 foot X 4 foot bed. Raked slow release fertiliser into the prepared surface. Planted my module grown Tosca torpedo onions and my long red florence onions.
A little clump of three or four were grown in each module and they were planted out, still in clumps. Watered in and left for home.

Another cool, gloomy day here today but I planted out the rest of my spare tomatoes and another 8 Chrysanthemums anyway.

Then I completed the winter's preparation work by forking the overgrown weeds out of the last untouched bed.

Well after the horrendous winds on monday, i went over the plot to find that the cover and top bars of the wilko walk-in blowaway (rather apt) had disapeared! The rest of the frame and the shelves were still standing, it was just the apex bit. Soon spotted it in the farmers field behind the plot. Three aborted rescue attempts later and several bruises from trying to climb fences, I finally managed to retrieve it today, still in one piece. The whole plot is a soggy, windblown mess.

Worked then Weeded, watered and did my runners structure and planted.

Bex I am just down the road from you and feel your pain, the weather has been truly shocking this week. Thinks are looking a little bit brighter over the next few days though!

Today I put on lots of layers and braved the cold to pot up my tomatoes. Didn't water then in, I'm hoping their roots will be a bit more cosy in the bigger pots tonight.
