What I did today - 2016

My chilli's, sweet peppers and toms are all having their very first day outside today.

They don't look to chuffed but they will get over it.

Planted two thirds of my tomatoes into their final pots and also planted my cabbage, sprouts and swedes out. Do they all need collars on or is it just the cabbage?

Very little done today it's been bl@@dy cold, wet & windy.
Watered everything. Sown some carrots for bucket challenge, harvested a bit of salad to go with tonight's burgers.

After a horrible day at work, I came home to sunshine so Potted on the squash and flower sprouts, planted up a couple of hanging baskets and sowed some more peas, feel a bit better now.

Planted out my Charlotte potatoes, beetroot I'd sown in newspaper pots, sweet-peas, more peas plus some purple podded ones. Moved strawberries and weeded the beds.

potted some tom into their final pots .planted out some Nasturtiums they was getting to big for G/H.took cutting of the rosemary ,
potted up some chillies. and put the last yellow peppers in the G/H.

Had 1and a half hours to do a bit of digging, so that's what I did!! Brambles, ivy and other stuff that's 'sticky' and rambling were removed. Need about 4 more full days, I reckon, to finish the job!
Then off to work ... (for a rest ....!!)

If they are members of the brassica family you would be better off putting collars on them. Make sure the soil is well firmed around them as you dont want the wind to rock them when they start to grow.

Potted on my Celeriac, Parsley, Thyme Lavender and Rosemary.
Potted on my Sunflowers.
Staked up my Sweetpeas which are now growing really well outdoors.
Planted out more of my Dahlias in their final position.
Earthed up my potatoes in the ground and in continers.
Deadheaded all the Daffodils and stored the containers away under the balcony until the Autumn. How quickly the time goes by.

Yeah, they are well firmed in. Especially my sprouts. I just hope the slugs don't get the buggers now.

If they have a go at them I'll place some cut in half plastic bottles over them until they're a bit bigger.

Today has been glorious, still is at nearly 8pm - sun still shining
I have potted on toms despite them not really being big enough but I might not get the chance next week, so potted on today
Potted on a gooseberry 'tree' that I bought late last year that had to survive in its pot until now. New lovely pot to keep it in until I can sort out its final place in the garden (lots of concrete to take up before I can do that)
Sowed purple climbing beans, the funny cucumbers Bal mentioned a few weeks back, a cantaloup that is supposed to work well in this country, more spinach and rocket as my rocket has already gone to seed.
Trimmed back a massive bush in the back garden and put as much as I could in the compost, the rest awaiting its turn next to the bin lol
Trimmed back my neighbour's lilac tree in the front that was overhanging my front garden.
Convinced my daughter to pull up all the weeds in the patio and she did a fab job!
Emptied a fair few containers from last year as I needed more compost for the kiwi I bought in 4ldi last week and placed in a gorgeous blue pot in the greenhouse
Split a 30p pot of thyme that I rescued from a supermarket whoopsie shelf into four pots that are now looking a bit sorry for themselves but should pick up soon.
Sowed herbs - basil, parsley, dill, coriander, sorrel, and more
Had several cups of coffee in the sunshine, along with a nice bacon butty that my daughter made me for lunch.
Same again tomorrow!

Didn’t do much today - popped in to make sure that everything in the green house was watered. My Courgettes are starting to sprout and poke up out of the compost.

Checked outside - the tall peas have started to nudge little green shoots through the soil - I've got 4 varieties and they're all starting - Hurray.

The Onions and garlic are also poking out. The onions and Elephant Garlic I sowed at the end of last year are doing well and the Elephant Garlic corms planted at the same time are showing their leaves (although I think I may have weeded some out last month by mistake).

The Pampas Grass is showing signs of black dots on the leaves - Hurrah it may be dying!!

Not much, had a re arrange of greenhouse, sowed some more salads, put some plants outside in the gales blew some leaves off my runners
OHs uncle popped out to borrow a power tool and brought me some plants , 2 cuc and 8 toms . Not left em in my greenhouse as its unheated and a clear night, could be chilly.

One of my cuc as has appeared as has 4 courgette , sunflowers starting to pop up along with cosmos.

Really hope this wind bvgger said off , it's so cold and tedious.

Decided to drag ( literally!) the old Rayburn woodburner that was in one of the auld shanty town huts, across the plot to position it in the Summerhouse. It was very heavy and I basically had to roll it across the plot like a dice. Once in the summerhouse I set to with a screwdriver and hammer removing rust and scale from it.
Brought a paving slab in for it to stand on and manoeuvred it into position in the corner. The original flue pipe was 5" cast pipe about 12mm thick. It was far too long and i couldn't lift it anyway. I set about it with a large hammer and managed to lop about 5 foot off its length.
I then bear hugged it and with numerous stops managed to get it into position. I then made up some metal straps to temporarily hold the flue upright
The glass in the front was broken so i smashed it all out and thought I may be able to use it like a chimaera After lighting a small fire inside their was too much smoke coming out the front, not a lot but still too much. Will have to have a re-think as its �30.00 for a new glass which i.m not prepared to pay.
I could bring my large gas bottle stove from my other greenhouse at a push but will just sleep on it for now as to what is best.

Wish I could remember what I've done today
I know I potted up some more BNS and courgettes, and some flower seedlings - ageratum, antirrhinum and something else.
Did some weeding in the front garden but I must have done more than that!
Not to worry, can't have been very exciting Perhaps tomorrow will be more memorable and productive!
