Time for Autumn garlic planting

Thanks! Think i might go down the supermarket root to be honest. Looking at how much garlic is from some of these websites has pushed me in this direction lol.

I'd try to get some organic stuff from a farmers market rather than some unknown variety grown in Spain. Remember that the layout costs now are usually worth it, you can save garlic cloves for planting every year from your own stock so it's well worth starting with a good reliable bulb.

As I said above I ordered my garlic from King's Seeds - the Oct mag offer......�11 including p&p.......well they just turned up and I am chuffed to bits.
The bulbs are huge and the elephant garlic cloves are massive.

I have 1 of each bulb of -
Early Purple Wight, Iberian Wight, Solent Wight, Bohemian Rose Wight, Mikulov Wight, Provence Wight and 4 Elephant cloves.

I have no idea what the difference is between them all as I just grow and eat it.

I saved my best bulb of both varieties I grew this year and will plant next month. Vallelado and Thermidrome. I should end up with a couple of dozen bulbs again, which is plenty to get us through the year.

Bought mine yesterday, i have a whole bed ready for it.
Never really grown garlic before, i am worried about the watering, as it is so dry here so will give the bed a good water but don't want to over water so that they rot. It a hard one.

In Madiera they grow them on top of long mounds (think earthed up spuds) & flood the trenches at the base each morning from the lavada's (water courses), that way the cloves stay dry but the roots can reach down to the wetter soil.

Never grown garlic but don't they need a period of cold, which they won't get in the greenhouse. Perhaps someone will put me right.

yes they need the period of cold so that the clove will split into the individual cloves in a bulb

I'm not so sure about this, to try & avoid allium leaf miner I have taken to planting mine in late Spring when the soil is soft enough for me to use my thumb as a dibber.

Not a garlic fan household then When my stepson is here, we can go through 5 bulbs a week!

I'm planning on planting some in modules this year, 'cos I've got epic bed raising plans for the winter, and otherwise I'd have to dig them up when I got to that bed! This way I can give them a good start then plant 'em out in spring. Hopefully.

I'm growing 'Marco', and some saved Elephant cloves.

Allium leaf miner was the reason my grape friend tried some in the GH last Autumn, not only were the bulbs double the size he didn't have any miner damage either, though he used enviromesh on his leeks this year to great success.

Hoping to get my elephant garlic in later. So chuffed with my crop this year an average clove is weighing in around 80g.


I intend to plant out the biggest cloves out and eat the smaller ones.

I found same size of bulbs for mid october sown around rose plants and the ones planted on x-mas day on other bed with good mulch of mushroom compost.

so this year I will delay it as much and don't menure the bed until spring.
